28th International Theological Symposium

The 28th International Theological Symposium on the theme "Tyranny and Freedom: Theology in Times of Crisis" was held at the Catholic Faculty of Theology of the University of Split on October 27 and 28. 2022. On behalf of the organizers, Associate professor Josip Dukić Ph.D., President of the Commission for Organizing Scientific-Theological Symposia, addressed a word of welcome to those present. Having explained the concept of tyranny (tyrannis and tyranos), which dates back to the 4th century BC and means harsh and illegal rule, Prof. Dukić emphasized that theology is called upon to react not only to situations of lack of freedom, but also to signs of its loss. "With the Russian aggression against Ukraine, Christian theology has found itself facing a great challenge. This concerns the understanding of slavery and freedom, tyranny and democracy, war and peace, faith and unbelief, the abuse of faith for war purposes, the Church, its role and the role of its representatives, ecumenism, courage for truth and language manipulations. The symposium aims to shed light on the role of theology, its courage and risks in times of crisis and societies filled with fear of tyranny, and to discuss the signs and language that indicate the beginnings of the process of losing freedom and democracy and the rise of tyranny," said Prof. Dukić, thanking all those who participated in the organization of the symposium, those who financially supported it: the Split-Makarska Archdiocese and the Franciscan Province of the Most Holy Redeemer in Split, as well as those who will participate in the symposium: lecturers and moderators.
