Searching for Words

From June 20th to 21st, 2024, the University of Graz will host the symposium "Searching for Words," which aims to enhance the status of ancient languages, such as Latin and Greek, in educational curricula by exploring the significance of preserving and studying written cultural heritage. Associate Professor Dr. Josip Dukić will present a lecture titled "The Center for Epigraphic, Paleographic, and Historical-Theological Research ‘Don Frane Bulić’ in Split and the Publication of Historical Sources. "

The Catholic Faculty of Theology at the University of Split is a hub of theological research and academic excellence, engaging in various scientific activities that contribute significantly to the field. Theological Journal "Church in the World"

“Church in the World” is a renowned theological periodical initiated in 1966 by the Split-Makarska Archbishop Dr. Frane Franić and his close collaborators. This periodical has been published continuously since its inception, providing a platform for theological discourse and scholarly articles on various aspects of theology, church history, and contemporary issues in the Church. The journal plays a crucial role in fostering theological scholarship and is highly regarded in academic circles.

Liturgical Periodical "Divine Service"

The liturgical periodical "Divine Service" was initiated in 1960 by the Franciscan Province of the Most Holy Redeemer. This periodical focuses on liturgical studies and practices, offering insights and scholarly articles that enhance the understanding and celebration of the liturgy within the Church. It serves as an important resource for theologians, liturgists, and clergy.

Annual Scientific-Theological Symposiums

The Catholic Faculty of Theology organizes regular annual scientific-theological symposiums. These symposiums bring together scholars, theologians, and students from various disciplines to discuss and explore contemporary theological issues. The symposiums provide a forum for presenting research, sharing ideas, and fostering academic dialogue, contributing to the advancement of theological knowledge and practice.

Research Centers

The faculty hosts two specialized research centers that focus on distinct areas of theological and historical research:

  • Hieronymianum - The Research Center on Saint Jerome's Life and Work
    Located at Zrinsko-Frankopanska 19, 21000 Split, the Hieronymianum focuses on researching the life and works of Saint Jerome. Its primary goals include translating Saint Jerome's works into Croatian, studying his significance for Croatian history and culture and preserving his cultural and spiritual heritage. The Center engages in interdisciplinary research, publishes scholarly and popular editions, and creates media materials to promote a deeper understanding of Saint Jerome. It also organizes seminars, conferences, and collaborates with both national and international academic institutions.
  • Center for Epigraphic, Paleographic, and Historical-Theological Research "Don Frane Bulić"
    This Center is dedicated to the research, study, and publication of epigraphic and diplomatic sources crucial to the history of the Catholic Church in Southern Croatia, particularly during the Ottoman period. It focuses on transcribing texts from the Turkish era, studying medieval manuscripts, and publishing books and documentaries on historical and theological topics. The Center fosters collaboration with similar institutions domestically and internationally, contributing significantly to the preservation and understanding of historical and theological heritage.

 

Saint Jerome

The Center is managed by the Director and the Administrative Board.

Mission:
The primary goal of the Hieronymianum is to research the life and works of Saint Jerome, translating his works that have not yet been translated into Croatian. Additionally, the Center is dedicated to studying Saint Jerome's significance for Croatian history and culture and preserving the cultural and spiritual heritage associated with him. The Center also aims to make extensive information about Saint Jerome's life and works available online and to create videos and other media materials.

Activities:
The Center achieves its mission through various activities, including:

  • Research: Conducting individual and group research on Saint Jerome's life and works in domestic and international archives, libraries, and research centers.
  • Translation: Translating Saint Jerome's works into Croatian.
  • Collection: Systematically collecting translations of Saint Jerome's works in other world languages and other scholarly literature about him.
  • Interdisciplinary Studies: Researching Saint Jerome's spiritual and cultural heritage in the Middle Ages, focusing on his influence on Glagolitic script and manuscripts.
  • Humanism and Renaissance Studies: Studying Saint Jerome's representation during the humanism and Renaissance periods, particularly his presence in the works of Croatian theologians, philosophers, historians, writers, and artists.
  • Publications: Publishing printed and electronic, scholarly and popular editions to promote a better understanding of Saint Jerome.
  • Online Presence: Launching websites and producing documentaries on Saint Jerome and related topics.
  • Seminars and Workshops: Organizing national and international seminars, summer and winter schools, and scholarly conferences.
  • Collaboration: Cooperating with domestic and international academic and research institutions, facilitating researcher, teacher, and student exchanges, and fostering collaboration with the local community and the business sector, especially tourism.

Funding:
The Center operates primarily through projects funded by its own resources, the Faculty, domestic and international projects, and sponsors.

Center  "Don Frane Bulić"

The Catholic Faculty of Theology at the University of Split inaugurated the Center for Epigraphical, Paleographical, and Historical-Theological Research "Don Frane Bulić" on December 12. 2018.

The Center is dedicated to:

  • Research, study, and publication of epigraphic and diplomatic sources relevant to the history of the Catholic Church in Southern Croatia, especially from the Ottoman period.
  • Transcription of texts from the Turkish era, facilitating closer collaboration with various institutions.
  • Study of medieval manuscripts from Southern Croatia.
  • Publication of books and production of historical and theological documentaries.

Named after Don Frane Bulić, a prominent Croatian historian and archaeologist, the Center enhances cooperation with similar institutions both domestically and internationally.

The Center's activities include:

  • Individual and group research in archives, museums, and libraries.
  • Processing and publishing epigraphic and diplomatic sources, particularly from the papal chancery and Ottoman rule.
  • Interdisciplinary research on medieval manuscripts.
  • Organizing seminars, summer and winter schools, and scholarly conferences.
  • Collaboration with national and international academic and research institutions.
  • Promoting exchanges among researchers, teachers, and students.

The Center aims to preserve historical knowledge and contribute to contemporary awareness through its diverse research and publication efforts.

Saint Jerome

The Catholic Faculty of Theology of the University of Split and The Literary Circle Split is organizing an international scientific conference entitled „Sanctus Hieronymus Dalmatiae vir illustris“ (Hieronymiana II) on the occasion of the 1600th anniversary of St. Jerome's death. The gathering, which will be participated by more than 30 exhibitors from Croatia and abroad, will be held on September 24 and 25 2020 at the Milesi Palace (Trg Braće Radića 7, Split).
